Product Design

Under the experienced leadership of Gregg Hallam, COG Engineering designs and refines an array of medical, industrial and commercial products to ensure high yields, forgiving assembly processes and optimal efficiency.
Expertise
Our team has designed, prototyped and manufactured an array of products including sporting goods, medical devices, electronic assemblies, manufacturing and field service tools. Each design begins with the definition of the product requirements, manufacturing expectations, material options and solid modeling. This creative structure ensures the product developed achieves your performance goals while keeping manufacturability and ramp up in mind.
Capabilities
Product design is more than modeling and prototyping. With our experience in R&D and Manufacturing, COG Engineering creates your product with a keen understanding of downstream requirements. As each component or assembly is crafted we consider various manufacturing methods, environmental requirements, short term and long term production requirements and cost constraints. We are well versed in many design, testing, modeling and manufacturing technologies and we work closely with a wide array of reliable and affordable solution providers.

Success Stories
A small company in Orange County had a concept for a "green" product for the growing surfing industry and a tight budget to develop the concept. The product's purpose and desired performance was first explored and defined. The intent was to manufacture a refillable dispenser to replace plastic wrapped surf wax with a more versatile tool, while simultaneously reducing the amount of waste produced in packaging. We started by investigating the current products on the market and the existing intellectual property. We determined that other entrepreneurs had started down the same path in the past but had met with several obstacles and shortcomings. We formulated a plan to address the hurdles and a model was created with injection molding and RF welding in mind as inexpensive manufacturing processes. From the computer model an SLA was made and evaluated for fit and function. After a few subtle modifications it was time to build some real products. We worked with a well known injection molding house in San Clemente who gave us some guidance in selecting the type of molds and materials that would meet our short term needs for pilot production while minimizing tooling costs. The resulting product product was unveiled at the Action Surf Retailer show (ASR) and was well received with a few criticisms from the target consumers and retailers. With our simple tooling we were able to modify a few elements of the design without incurring significant additional costs. Within a few weeks the modified version was in production and on the shelves.
